Neil Watson is an established artist from Bristol, with a fresh perspective on urban landscapes. He draws inspiration from the vivacious street art scenes and the dynamic energy of the South West, with his artistic focus being an attempt to infuse life into his canvases.
As a self-taught artist, Neil uses oil paint as his chosen medium, embodying influences reminiscent of Edward Hopper’s style. He had a reignited passion for painting during lockdown, rekindling an artistic journey that began back in his school days.
In June 2023 he participated in this season’s Sky Arts Landscape Artist of the Year held at Hever Castle. Subsequently, in 2024, Neil was one of 8 finalists in the Dubel Art Prize.
His work seamlessly blends the vibrant spirit of Plein Air painting with a masterful interplay of colour, light, and energy, transforming landscapes into captivating works of art.
Philosophy
My art is about the importance of appreciating the world around us. There’s too much negativity in the world, I want my paintings to celebrate the beauty in the everyday.

My Art
Every canvas is an opportunity to tell a story: a fiction, a biography, a fantasy. Every piece builds, layer over layer, fat over lean, until the story is told.
My art isn’t about form, it’s about moments and movements – I want to move people to pause, just for a moment. I paint from real world inspiration. The places, the people, the real narrative of place rather than the curated tour.
I’m drawn to the landscape, especially the urban setting and how we humans interact with one another and place.
I paint in oils, turning up the amps on chroma to journal the world around me in heightened colour. Why?
The world is full of energy and hope – humanity’s aura is bright despite the shackles of mundanity that we apply to our existence.
My art celebrates that hope.
