Neil Watson – Art

Neil Watson – Post-corporate-captive artist, making up for lost time

Neil is a Bristol-based artist (oil painter) who had a love for art taught out of him at school. The pressure of getting a ‘proper career’ led him away from art at an early age and he didn’t draw, or paint anything for well over twenty years.

During lockdown Neil found a box of paints from his A-Levels in 1994 and realised that most were still ok to paint with, so in 2020 he bought a canvas and some brushes and he reacquainted himself with his first love.

Absence makes the heart grow fonder, and so now, in mid-life Neil has a youthful hunger to paint. This raw, un-polished energy drives his work to create vibrant scenes of Bristol and beyond.

*Corporate-Captive – one of the very many artists who were told to get a proper job rather than following their purpose – art.

Neil Watson Art

Bristol-based oil painter, Dubel Prize finalist.

Neil Watson is an emerging artist from Bristol, with a fresh perspective on urban landscapes. He draws inspiration from the vivacious street art scenes and the dynamic energy of the South West, with his artistic focus being an attempt to infuse life into his canvases.

As a self-taught artist, Neil uses oil paint as his chosen medium, embodying influences reminiscent of Edward Hopper’s style. He had a reignited passion for painting during lockdown, rekindling an artistic journey that began back in his school days.

In June 2023 he participated in this season’s Sky Arts Landscape Artist of the Year held at Hever Castle.

His work seamlessly blends the vibrant spirit of Plein Air painting with a masterful interplay of colour, light, and energy, transforming landscapes into captivating works of art.

/ Philosophy

My art is about the importance of appreciating the world around us. There’s too much negativity in the world, I want my paintings to celebrate the beauty in the everyday.
