What a night!

My amazing adventure in Mayfair with the Dubel Prize

Sometimes in life you get genuine moments where you have to pinch yourself and ask, “is this really happening?!”. For me, this was definitely the case on Thursday 9th May 2024, a day that I’ll never forget and one that I will eternally be grateful for.

From the moment I arrived and met the team at Yamaha Music’s beautiful flagship store I was treated like a film star and it was… AMAZING!

Here’s a look at the story of my 15 minutes of fame (Thanks Warhol).

How It started

I saw a post on Instagram that talked about an art prize I hadn’t come across before, the Dubel Art Prize…

Applications open for this year [as of 12.7.24] – so get in there!

There was a good reason I’d not come across it before, it was the inaugural year of the prize.

Unencumbered with requisite experience, knowledge, trepidation… I applied.

More astoundingly – I got shortlisted. I was kind of nonplussed as I figured they’d weed me out in the initial shortlist… but a few days later I got an email telling me I’d been selected as a shortlisted artist.

I didn’t know what to think!

My application painting

I applied with “Wonky Bridge”, my fourth painting as I reasoned it was the direction I was going… I am very happy I decided to do that because I think that painting was exactly the kind of thing the competition was looking for.

What I didn’t know…

I had no concept that I needed a body of work. Twenty pieces to be exact.

Talk about necessity being the mother of invention and what a catalyst for creativity it became! I spent the following 8 months producing a further 18 paintings to include in my event which was held in Mayfair on May 9th @ Jeru (a beautiful restaurant I’d recommend!).

What you need to know

You’ve got until midnight on 16th August to apply for this award for 2024/25.

Here’s the small print:

The award is open to all individuals who are either self-taught or have graduated from art colleges in the United Kingdom within the past five years.

Following the application period, a panel of distinguished judges will carefully review the submissions and curate a shortlist of artists.

This year’s award is exclusively open to painters.

What a night!
