Will Roachfort
What Time Do You Finish?
2017
I love Norman Rockwell’s work, but dare I say that Will Roachfort has taken the baton and accelerated with it?
This painting has the humour and story telling of Rockwell at his finest. I can’t really pick a particular favourite from Will’s work, but this one is so timeless and beautifully executed that I chose it here.
What was it that grabbed me?
The story.
There’s an everyday beauty about it, so perfectly rendered that it’s elevated to art.
It’s glamourous without any glamour. The window lettering, like the gold lettering on a box of chocolates that might accompany the roses.
How does this approach inform my style?
Craft!
Will shows his process videos on Instagram. He stages scenes and paints from the collection of images he captures. He often makes props too, there is no quick response to a scene, or a feeling.
This is crafted excellence. I love it!
For me, I want to explore how he paints people. I think he captures them in a way that makes them movie stars – quite the skill.
